Located in Washington DC, American University's film program is one of the first in the country and is ranked in the top 12 by Hollywood Reporter, which called the program a "good investment for aspiring industry players of all types with strong, socially active documentary studies....ideal for: politically active storytellers". The program has links to international partners and programs in the Czech Republic and Mexico.

The School of Communication is also home to two non-profit organizations, the Center for Environmental Filmmaking, headed by Emmy Winner Chris Palmer, and the Center for Social Media, whose work has changed fair use and copyright laws in the US.

The School of Communication offers a two year M.A. in Film and Video, three year M.F.A. in Film and Electronic Media and a 20-month weekend M.A. program in Producing for Film and Video.
