Aims and Objectives

“Steps” International Rights Film Festival is a non-profit event, the main purpose of which is to attract attention of the community to the justice in the modern world, where human rights oppression comes with animal kingdom oppression. Many barbarous manners and prejudices are often ignored and considered as normal. That’s why the works of creative people will help the audience understand that every person is responsible for everything that is going on around them.
The name “STEPS” means that both a person and the humanity as one may ascend the stairs to the rectitude or descend the stairs to the barbarity. The only question is which direction each of us will choose.

Regulations.

The festival accepts films of all categories dedicated to human rights, animal and environmental protection, films on moral and social aspects, and also films that on political problems.

Human rights topics include: government, power, bureaucracy; army; fight for peace; war (arming race); capital punishment; state legislation; health; poverty; education; media (censorship, interference of media into private life, freedom of speech); prison, prisoners rights, veterans; racism; religion; prostitution; suicides; disabled; cruel treatment for children; children's enslavement; children who escape from homes; delinquents, penal colonies; cruelty for children; enslavement; ravishment, sexual abuse; non traditional sexual orientation; sexual discrimination; workers' rights; alcohol, drugs, addiction; crimes; cultural diversity; immigration; mental diseases.

Animals' rights issues include: agricultural animals, intensive methods of growing; wild animals, species preservation that are on the brink of extinction; hunting; bioethics; vegetarianism, veganism; animals for food industry, meat industry; animals for clothing (fur industry etc.); experimentations on animals; animal fighting (corrida, dog fighting etc.); circus, zoos; homeless animals; pets; sterilization of animals, overpopulation; cruel treatment of animals; shelters; animals protecting laws.

Environmental problems exposed are the following: water pollution; air pollution; deforestation; global warming, ozone layer destroying; world ocean pollution; extinct flora/fauna preservation; alternative sources of energy; landscape preservation; toxic chemicals, dumps.

Some films as well as films-winners can be included in "Echo programme of the festival" (the travelling programme of the festival).

The programme

The programme consist of 4 section: competition programme, non-competition programme, "Panorama" or "Retrospective show".
The decision in which section the film will be demonstrated is made by the Festival Selection Board.

The desision is made accortiong to the following contitions:

• Relevance of the work to the topic of STEPS festival;
• Overall quality and coherence of the work;
• Originality and quality of the script;
• Quality of the film direction;
• Technical quality of the work

Awards

Awards of annual “STEPS” Film Festival (golden statuettes and diplomas) are given to the films-winners, actors, directors and script writers, as well as to the NGOs for their work and contribution to the development of global rights protection movement.

Approximately 100 hundred films from 30 countries were demonstrated at the festival 2008: 13 feature film, 50 documentaries, 12 short films, 14 animations and 13 music videos.
Competition program included 41 films.

Since the Festival is a non-profit event, entrance to all film demonstrations is free.

Everyone is welcome to visit festival screenings and all the films on the above mentioned topics are welcome to participate.
